‘I get to grow from an insecure, bumbling kid to the most confident rock star every night.’

It’s pretty clear that Dominique Scott is having a blast in the national tour of Rock of Ages. As leading man Drew, Scott claims that he is just like his character: “a 23 year old who moves to the big city to become famous.” Scott talked with Broadway.com about the high-energy musical, which comes to Centennial Concert Hall from December 11 through December 13.

“I get to grow from an insecure, bumbling kid to the most confident rock star every night,” Scott said of his character’s arc in the show. “It's the kind of challenge where I'm like, ‘OK, let’s see how much ass I'm gonna kick tonight.’

Aside from Drew’s transformation from a dive-bar busboy to rock star, Scott relishes the show’s '80s score. “I get to sing, like, the entire classic rock canon and dance as well,” Scott said. “During ‘Cum On Feel The Noize,’ I get to run downstage, completely breaking the fourth wall and play with the audience. I scream at them, they scream back; it’s awesome. In fact, sometimes I like to play a little game. I call it: Who can be louder? The audience or Dom. It’s very powerful.”

Set in L.A.’s Sunset Strip in 1987, Rock of Ages tells the story of Drew, a boy from South Detroit, and Sherrie, a small-town girl, both in L.A. to chase their dreams of making it big and falling in love. The Tony-nominated musical features songs from Journey, Bon Jovi, REO Speedwagon and more, including “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Wanted Dead or Alive” and “Can’t Fight This Feeling.”

“Seeing the audience get up on their feet to scream and party with us every night is incredible,” Scott said. “No matter how young, old, crazy or tired the audience is, every show the entire audience is up on their feet. Getting to share that energy and joy every night with people is absolutely breathtaking.”
