Rock of Ages - National Tour

A rock musical with the greatest hits of the '80s.

Leading Lady Shannon Mullen on Transitioning from ‘Innocent to Sexy' in Rock of Ages on Tour

Rock of Ages, the musical filled with some of the biggest hits of the '80s, boasts plenty of over-the-top characters, but the central role of Sherrie brings some much-needed sensitivity to the hit show. Shannon Mullen, who stars as Sherrie in the national tour, talked to about singing “kick-ass music” in the show, which plays the Centennial Concert Hall from December 11 through December 13.

As a small-town girl who moves to Los Angeles in pursuit of the spotlight, Sherrie begins the show green but quickly learns tough life lessons, which is what Mullen loves about the role. “Playing her story allows me the opportunity to grow up each and every night,” Mullen said. “Sherrie is a dreamer, like every little girl starts out. Through a series of events, she finds herself.” Although Sherrie endures a meaningful change throughout the show, Mullen still gets to vamp it up with the rest of her audacious castmates. “I would have to say that ‘Waiting for a Girl’ is one of my favorite moments to perform. It is so freeing to switch from naïve and innocent to sexy and desirable within seconds.”

Set in L.A.’s Sunset Strip in 1987, Rock of Ages tells the story of Drew, a boy from South Detroit, and Sherrie, a small-town girl, who are chasing their dreams. The Tony Award-nominated musical features songs from Journey, Bon Jovi, REO Speedwagon and more, including “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Wanted Dead or Alive” and “Can’t Fight This Feeling.”

“Through Sherrie, I get to teach the audience that no matter what trials and tribulations life throws your way, [each has] a lesson to teach and help better define what makes us strong,” Mullen said of her character’s arc. “Not to mention I get to sing some pretty kick-ass music."
